Default GMC Syclone Drivetrain

Hey guys, I was just sitting hear thinking and the idea popped into my head that it might be cool to build a late 80's/early 90's S10 into a fast drag truck. I remember that part of the reason why the GMC syslones were so fat is because they were AWD. What kind of drivetrain did those things have under them? Was it something custom that GM whipped up or was it a donor type thing where GM took parts from other trucks and made it work. The reason why I ask is because S10's with 350's are pretty common, but I've never seen a 4WD S10 built like that with performance in mind. Any info would help. Thanks.

i think the tranny, transfercase and front diff are very similar to the olds bravada of that era....i always thought a turbo LS1 in one of those would be sick, you'd have a tough time gettin the drivetrain to survive, i would think, mostly the front diff and cv's.

I've seen high nine second Syclones with what would appear to be stack drivetrain. Is the Bravada drivetrain a direct swap or would it require lots of fab work?

i am not 100% sure but i think the parts are not all that diferent than the standard 4.3 parts. it has an awd case rather than a 4wd case but i bet that is it.

i had a 89 s10 blazer that i put a zz3 crate motor in with a 125shot. it was never crazy fast but i got it into the 13's with a stock front, rear and tcase. of course i had to beef up the tranny. 10+years ago 13's was prety quick.

If I was to build my own "Syclone" just for the hell of it, what would you guys suggest I use in terms of drivetrain?

I like my V-8 S-10's. There is really no need for 4wd. 2wd is nice and light. I went 10.64 in steet trim with 235/60's. OWrks good on the street if i ramp the nitrous up a little slower. If going over 20 it wil dead hook with a 170 shoot, which is what I went 10.64 on. I tell ya I crush cars on the street, so fun.

Wow, thats really awesome man. I don't know, the only reason why I was thinking about 4wd is just to be different. If I can't find a legitimate way to make it work, then I will definitely go with a 2wd. But hey, I'm at least gonna try.

I think I read once that the SY/TY pair had a vette tranny and a transfer case from an AWD astro van. Not 100% if its correct, but thats what I heard. ~josh

I've also heard that GM borrowed the AWD parts from the AWD *** Vans. I've always wanted to pirate one and see if I could get that **** to fit in my Camaro....hmmmm.....

You can make the 4.3L turbo motor haul serious a$$. Just get a Syclone and start modding away. Built motor, bigger turbo etc etc...the list goes on and on. No need for a V8 swap.

You should check out www.syty.org
