G86 Differential
#1
Am I correct in understanding that the G86 is just the standard open differential? I am suprised my truck didn't come with the G80 since it came with just about everything else attached to it. Anyone know of any potential problems with putting a locker into a quadrasteer??

I think the G86 is a limited slip diff (clutches w/ preload spring/s), the G80 is the locking diff (locks after so much wheel spin).
When I "built" my 2500HD Duramax online it gave me both options. Look close, I am almost certain the G86 is better.

Okay, well that would make sense. Would I be able to hear noise from the clutches if I were to spin the tires? Something in the rear end is making a clunking type noise. I am hoping the quadrasteer isn't breaking already with only 2k miles on it.

NO! A clutch type LSD (Eaton for isntance or Ford's Trac-Lok) is quiet and smooth with 200-400lbs preload springs, maybe even up to the 800lbs springs.
Q-Steer seems nice but I am too weary to get that on the 2500HD I plan to order. Just came out, too much crap to break...espically on some 2Hi launches w/ slicks in the Diesel. I am just gonna get the same suspension that's on my Z71 now...Ride Control and AutoTrac transfercase.

Hehe, I don't have to worry about launching in 2hi since I have the all wheel drive. I was scared of the quadsteer but the techs at the GMC dealer said that there had been no reported problems with it up here. Since we see a lot of below zero temperatures I figured if they were going to be junk that we would have already seen some breakage. Well I guess I need to take it in to have the clunk looked at.

Can't get Ride Control or AutoTrac either.

Go build an SLT GMC 2500HD Sierra on www.gmc.com ...it's there. This is on '03+ vehicles. 02 and older couldn't get them.
You can also option for 4.10:1 gears in a Duramax now too!
