Default flushing my coolant questions

07 1500 classic 4.8

I'm going to flush my coolant for the first time before it gets too cold out (I know it's overdue) and I have a few questions about it. I cant find a radiator drain so I guess I'll just pull the lower hose and drain it that way. So far my plan is to drain what I can, re fill with distilled water and run it for a while, drain it again, and repeat until I get just water out of it, then fill it once more with distilled water and some radiator flush stuff, the drain that and add the 50/50. What I'm worried about is not getting the bottom of the block completely drained. If i dump in a bunch of 50/50 and the bottom of the block is still full of water then my ratio will be way off.

Any help or tips would be awesome.

PS I had no idea where to post this, hope I got it right.
Thanks a bunch, Brian

There should be a petcock on the bottom of the radiator, driver side. At least that's where it's at on the 28" radiators, I couldn't imagine there not being one on the newer models as well.

Check your manual for cooling system capacity. Add straight antifreeze for half that capacity, then top off with water. Then it doesn't matter if you drain all the water used to flush it.

Some of the newer models don't have petcocks...

Be sure to get all of the air out of the system, I do this by squeezing the top hose and pulling it toward the ground while filling the system. I'll fill the reservoir 3/4 of the way up, then squeeze and pull...you'll hear and feel the air working it's way through the sytem and into the reservoir. I keep doing this until I stop hearing/feeling the air bubbles and haven't had an air pocket yet

They stopped putting the drain on the radiator a few years back. My 05 does not have one. just take the lower hose loose. There are block drain plugs on either side of the block. They are big plugs and take a 17 MM allen wrench. The only problem with the one on the passenger side...it is under the starter.

I filled mine with the upper radiator hose (very slow process) until it drained out a bit from thermostat, then connected the hose and filled the reservoir the rest of the way. I will have to try the pulling the trick...Cause I think I have an air pocket. Truck doesn't over heat, but the temp gauge stays at 170ish then shoots to normal op temp and stays there as it should.
