Default FINALLY MADE MY MIND UP: LS1 IT IS!! ETA 3.5 Weeks

Okay, so I decided to put an LS1 in my truck, but from what I hear it would be easier to bore out a 5.3 block. So as to not have intake/ThrottleBody/PCM problems

So I need to buy a 5.3 running motor, which I have found already:
Do I need a Ls1 Crank?? What would be best: 4.8 heads, 5.3 heads, or LS1 heads?

I know that I need LS1 Pistons (Help!!) and I have some '02 Z06 Rods

What am I forgetting other than gaskets etc . . . ?? What's different that I need to change out and stuff.

What are shop charges for Boring and Honing generally??

HELP GUYS!! You know it better than I do!!

The 5.3 snd 4.8 heads are the same and I would stick to those instead fo the 5.7's.

seems like when i got my old school 350 bored out, it was around 250 dollors. but that also included getting it tested for cracks and a good bath in the vat since it was sitting outside in the woods when i aquired it.

Boring a 5.3L block to LS1 bore size?? I'm not going to tell you that it can't be done, but you do realize that we're talking about an over bore of something like .120 (3.78" 5.3L bore to a 3.90" LS1 bore), right?? That's a LOT of material being removed. Just for reference, a typical overbore is in the neighborhood of .030-.060 ("thirty" or "sixty" over).

Honestly, it seems like it'd just be a whole lot of trouble... it'd be so much easier to buy a 6.0L and be done with it... you'd even get the advantage of the 4" bore over the 3.9".

Default Bored out 4.8/5.3

[QUOTE=dowright82]Okay, so I decided to put an LS1 in my truck, but from what I hear it would be easier to bore out a 5.3 block. So as to not have intake/ThrottleBody/PCM problems

So I need to buy a 5.3 running motor, which I have found already:
Do I need a Ls1 Crank?? What would be best: 4.8 heads, 5.3 heads, or LS1 heads? Like above, the 4.8/5.3 heads are identical. The truck heads will give you much higher compression if you stay NA else use the #241 LS1 heads for boost applications. Also the 5.3 crank is identical to the LS1/LS6 crank. No need there either.

I know that I need LS1 Pistons (Help!!) and I have some '02 Z06 Rods I have some stock LS6 pistons for cheap ( $60 shipped ) if you want them. Just need the rings and possibly new wrist pins.
What am I forgetting other than gaskets etc . . . ?? What's different that I need to change out and stuff. No other differences in gaskets, setups, etc. Go with any LS1 gasket kit and settings.

What are shop charges for Boring and Honing generally?? I paid $350 to bore with torque plates, hone, vat, and wash the block. Usually it is less but the amount of material they removed ( 0.112" ) added a few extra cuts.

Also, do not worry about taking that much material. Burnout, you are right that it is mucho meat to cut but the 4.8/5.3 blocks have plenty of space. I have the sonic measurements of mine, post bore, and everything is well above target of > 0.150".

You would be better off starting with a 5.7 or a 6.0 longblock,If you already had a 5.3 to build then you could do a bore job and budget 5.7 guts

I agree! You are starting to mix-max some off the wall and un-proven combo's. Some of the benefit of an LS1 (347 cu in.) is the fact that they are aluminum blocks and substantially lighter. I would go one way or the other, I bought my 6.0L new off Ebay of $1600 with injectors, intake, throttlebody and all. I'm sure you will spend more then that for the deal you were talking about before its all said and done, and you still won't have a 6.0L. Boring a 5.3 that far over is gonna more then likely cause it to run HOT on the street. I know anything more then .040 over on a regular small block Chevy really starts to heat up in the hotter months. I had a .060 388 (.060 over 350 with a 400 crank) and I couldn't keep cool enough to run on the street in the summer.
