Default considering edelbrock shorties instead of longtubes

i installed my slp cats, and opened the exhaust up pretty good, i'm impressed, i want headers now, and i'm doing comparison and just can't seem to convince myself to spend the big bucks. i can get edelbrock ceramic coated shorties for 300 bucks. meanwhile bare longtubes are around 800-1000 for ceramic.. and then there's the dynatech sytem, 1300 is a lot of money. horsepower per dollar i've seen dyno nymbers around 8-12 for shorties, and like 15-25 for long tubes. if i'm on the high end for shorties, (which i think i would be, because of my slp cats) then..... horspower per dollar would be much greater, and i'd be able to afford the converter and gears i want. i've been told the shorties free up low range torque and hp, which is where this motor seems to be lacking. it's a daily driver, and 1500-3500 rpm power increase would be great, i don't want to hang this thing at 6000 all the time, i don't mind bringing it there, but where's hte horsepower made in the long tubes... maybe 5000? i'd rather the power down low......comments are appreciated

Long tubes are a better bang for the buck. I had shorties and exhaust done at the same time. I was pretty impressed at the time. I later changed to long tubes. They produced better results than the shorties and exhaust combined. Be patient, watch the classified section and you will get a good deal on a used set. Long tubes are worth the wait.

do you think the longtubes responded better to your forced induction though? what was done to the motor at the time of the shorties, compared to when you did the longtubes...

Why not a set of thorleys for $460. That isn't much more than the edelbrocks, and you can still use your SLP cats. Also, if you are doing longtubes and a stall wait on the gears until after you are done. You may not want the gears after that.

Please don't. Save your money for some long tubes or spend at a strip club.

I might be confused here, but it sounds like you're saying that shorties will perform better at lower rpm's than the long tubes. And the long tubes will shine in the upper rpm's.

I agree with the last part, the long tubes will definatley help top end, but I beg to differ with the first part. Long tubes will give you better low rpm torque and hp too. As long as their sized correctly, long tubes will make more torque and hp, regardless.

I place here in Springfield put shorties on a RCSB 4.8 and only made 5 rhwp with them. I bought the Dynatech headers system and the lowend is night and day difference. When you take off the manifolds look at the ports on them, they look like they flow very well in stock form. I have done the exhaust, pullies, KN FPIK, and a programmer, and by far the longtubes have made the biggest difference over everything.
