Considering buying a Diesel truck. Stick or Auto for drag?
#1
Anyone shift their trucks? How do your ET's compare?
I was going to buy the Ford 6.0, until many folk were having problems. Now I'm aiming at the 6.6 GMC. While it will primarily a work truck and tow vehicle, I want to run 14.0 or better with it occasionally.
I've heard of several people having problems with the Allison 5-sp when dragging, so I might get the ZF 6-sp manual instead. Anyone running a manual?

Skip the stick shift.I have'nt heard of anyone breaking an Allison except with the most extreme combos, they can be upgraded and made bombproof. With the 6 sp you will be a bunch slower.I don't know of anyone that races a Duramax that runs a 6 sp.My mildly mod Duramax runs hi 14s in terrible weather.I will improve on the time in the cool fall weather.

They aren't breaking them, they go into "limp" mode or fry the clutch packs. Trans work ain't cheap.
A good driver can run a manual car just as fast (or faster) than an automatic.
Has anyone tried a manual?

I feel it every time it cuts the power on the shifts at full throttle.Several different people are working on a fix for this and when a fix is available I'm sure I will cut a second off my times.

Besides 1st gear is a creaper anyway. The Allison doesn't break the stock stall converter falls apart first. Swap that out ($1500!!!) then you have no slip there. Once that problem is alleviated, you need a valve body upgrade and well another $1500 later you have a pretty much bomb proof trans. Check out www.atsdiesel.com they do they BEST trans upgrades.

You can potentially out pull an Auto with a Manual vehicle but there is more chance for error in the Manuals. It takes a BADASS driver to out pull a stock auto, but a fully built one with a good shift kit...I'd have to say no way. No full blown drag racers use a Manual box. BMW's SMG (sequential manual gearbox) is a clutchless manual like an auto, Mercedes uses only autos in the AMG, Ferrari uses F1 shifting, etc.
I'd never go to a manual, sure they are fun for "spirited driving" but they get old fast in the daily commute. Nothing beats a great auto.

The problems most diesel owners seem to have with a manual and trying to drag race is that they loose boost in between shifts and the motors dont rev fast enough to get the boost back up to where it should be for a while. Id get the auto. but if you really want to tow, you cant beat that new 6 speed
