You need mufflers, no question about that. Keeping cats helps kill the rasp and crackling. I had planned to pipe out both sides of the truck, but like others mentioned the gas tank really doesn't allow that. Ended up running a dual exit on the passenger side. Long tubes, aftermarket cats, x-pipe, dual spintechs, sounds amazing. Just a tad loud though

i ran mine dumped under my bed for almsot 4 years & it's pretty freakin loud. just added tail pipes in march & not only did i pick up a little low end, but i can actually hear myself think, can talk to people in the truck, can hear the radio, etc

u defanetly need a muffler.. i ran lt headers no cats on two one chamber flowmasters and it was loud.. toooo loud.. and it had real raspy sound... i recently changed it to a dual in dual out magnaflow with side exit infront of the tire and love it.. its got a nice sound when u turn it on and while driving around town its got a low tone but u can hear it nicely. when at WOT o man.. its nice really loud with a great sound.. IMO i love it.. and im running the 28" magnaflow.. its got the built in x pipe.. remember no cats makes a big difference in sound.

Aint that the truth, I gutted my cats when I swapped my trans 2 weeks ago and it's like the noise level doubled. I'm currently running StainlessWorks LT's with their catted y-pipe, only gutted, with a 3" si/ 2.5" do Gibson 24" muffler dumped before the axle and it's very loud IMO, and I like loud. I'm only afraid that I'm going to draw unwanted attention to myself. I have a 3" si/so 18" Magnaflow and 3" DMH cutout that I will be installing, only I will be running a Magnafow 3" stainless tailpipe that I will be dumping after the axle, curious to see how it will sound with the shorter and smaller muffler, only run over the axle instead of dumped before it.
