A few years back I raced my brother with my old F150.
Me: 1999 F150 extra cab, 2-wheel drive, 5.4, with a cap, Flowmaster.
Bro: 2001 Chevy 1500 extra cab, 4x4, 5.3, no cap or cover, stock.
The Ford was faster most of the way with the Chevy gaining some on the top end. Very, very close race all around. We did it over and over to be sure. Whoever got the jump would win, but the other could never take over. I ran the truck once just to see how fast (or slow) it really was. Firebird is knowng for being a couple tenths slower than most track, but it ran a 16.4. The same night I ran a new Hemi, reg-cab, 4x4 and beat him through the 1/8th mile both times. He'd take me after that and ran about .2 quicker both times. He and I talked later and both were VERY surprised he wasn't running at least a second quicker. His truck was new with just over 1,000 miles on it.
These were all very good, solid races. Not just a one-time "someone got the jomp and smoked someone else" type of race. I'd say you have your hands full, especially on the bottom end, or up to about 60-70mph.
I wouldn't go based on people saying "you'll beat him for sure, my buddy once beat a guy in a........... Or, "it's a Ford......"
Good luck, have fun!

Your 4.8 is 285hp...the 5.4 is 255hp, I think...with a little more tq than you...his rear isn't that much lower and he's 500lbs more than yours, you could win. If you don't change the shift points with the tuner you can manually shift it. Mine shifts at about 5,300 (1-2). I man-shifted at 5,700 at the track. Good luck, don't wreck!
