I started tearing down the engine compartment of my truck so I can swap my cam today. I had just removed the crank pulley and timing chain cover, I went to grab the chain and it was loose on one side. Now I have to change the timing chain. Do I have to drop the oil pan to change it? If I have to drop the pan do I have to change the oil pan gasket? I have 50,000 on it should I change the oil pump too? Where should I buy it?

Leave the chain alone. All lsx engines have a timing chain so sloppy that it looks rediculous. It's completely normal. Promise

 

yes, your timing chain should be perfectly fine.

 

Agreed, even my new motor with 16k miles on it was pretty loose.

 

Do yourself a favor and swap in an LS2 timing chain. It's only $40 and it's much stronger.

 

Thats wierd. So theyre really loose? Where would you buy the LS2 chain?

 

Is your cam sprocket solid with a goofy bar around half of it or does it have holes in it? My '05 LQ4 had a LS2 timing chain set in it already I don't think it's worth the hassle of dropping the pan and removing the oil pump to change out your timing chain. Leave well enough alone, change the cam and move on
