Cam and Gearing Questions

Cam and Gearing Questions
Ok, I just got myself an LQ4/4l80e for my project and have a few questions regarding cam and gearing. The truck I'm putting this in will be a weekend driver, so I want the biggest, best sounding cam for a 6.0 without compromising too much in performance. This truck will have 35's and I need to regear the front and rear end soon, but cannot figure out what cam I want. I'm thinking 4.10 or 4.56 but not too sure yet.
So, can any of you recommend a good cam for me, and based on that, what gears would you recommend?
Thanks in advance

Sound is subjective, that is really up to you there.
You'll have to watch youtube video's or something to get an idea of what certain camshaft may sound like but that really doesn't give the whole story because tuning plays a part in how the idle is controlled. The larger the camshaft the greater the need for a an aftermarket stall converter. Most places like Texas speed or Brian Tooley racing have stage 1 and 2 camshafts, those should be good with a stock stall. The stage 3 and higher will usually need an aftermarket higher stall converter.
Also you'll need larger fuel injectors too and a fuel pump to support the power.
With 35's and a 4 speed auto, go with 4.56's.

The larger the camshaft it requires more compression. The 317 heads on the LQ4 will be working against you in the compression department. A set of 706 heads will boost compression and can be had pretty cheap. If you're keeping the 317's look for a camshaft that closes the intake valve early which will add more dynamic compression. The Cam Motion Little Chopper (222/232 .595" .587" 108*) closes the intake at 36* degrees and has a overlap of 11* degrees. That amount of overlap along with the 108* degree LSA makes a nice lopey idle. It requires 9.4 minimum static compression and a 2,800 minimum stall.
I ran this camshaft in a LQ9 and was happy with the results.
This is what the Little Chopper sounds like in my 6.0L engine.

sounds great. What is your exhaust setup if you don’t mind me asking?

Speed Engineering 1-7/8" headers with their true dual exhaust. The kits tailpipes wouldn't fit with my 4/6 drop so my muffler guy bent tails to exit out the rear. I didn't want the grandpaw exits so I had him tighten them up somewhat like a Corvette. I replaced the SE mufflers that came in the kit with two 14" Magnaflow's and later added two Vibrant resonators to cure my headache after an hour of driving.
SE True Dual Kit. These mufflers are beautiful and sound really nice IMO. One of mine developed a buzzing sound at idle that was beyond annoying. This is why they were replaced with the Magnaflow's.

@RedXray I thought yours was dumped/had no tips?
The only other exit was the right bedside behind the rear tire.
