Bluish Smoke Help?
Hey Guys.
I have a 2002 Silverado 5.3 Engine. If I let the truck idle for 3-5minutes or longer and shut it off and immediately restart it. Bluish and Black smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe. More on the Bluish side at times. It smells like some oil might be in the smoke. I have no cats on the truck. I use O2 Simulators to fool the computer. I was wondering if any of you all have seen this?
I just changed the oil for the first time. My truck has 3222 miles on it. I used Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic oil 10w-30.
It used 12-14OZ of oil at this oil change which was its first oil change.
What do you all think. The engine is not making any noises such as knocking. It has good power.

Re: Bluish Smoke Help?
I am not an expert by any means, and I'm sure someone here can help you better than I, but here are my thoughts.
I read up on the proper oil break in on new vehicles when I got my truck. My first oil change was at 5000 miles. The GM break in oil needs to run in the engine for awhile to get everything seated properly. I just ran a normal 10 40 oil for the next 3500 miles. Then I made my switch over to 5 30 synthetic. This was what I read from the Royal Purple site and a few others as well. I'm not sure if this would have anything to do with your problem or not, but just thought I would throw it out there.
What all have you done mod wise to your truck?
Have you noticed any oil leaks anywhere?

Re: Bluish Smoke Help?
i think it is because you don't have any cats. i am not sure if everyone that has taken off their cats have seen smoke but a friend with a camaro took his cats off and i see bluish just for a little bit. he doesn't race his car that much and it's relatively new so i'm pretty sure he's not burning oil. thats my 2 cents, i don't think you have anything to worry about. now if you turn your truck on and it continuously burns oil than thats a problem.

Re: Bluish Smoke Help?
Valve seals, especially on old school small blocks and 4.3L V6's are notorius for blueish smoke. But it usually only happens after the engine has sat for awhile (say, overnight). The black smoke may simply be cause it's running rich due to lack of cats.
As to engine break in, Big J, 5000 miles is a hell of a long time before changing your oil! I don't let 5,000 miles past for a regular oil change, let alone when the engine is breaking in. On every car/truck I've owned, that first oil change comes at 500 miles, then 1,000 then 3,000.
The reason for changing it so soon is because there are metal shavings and particles that have come loose as the engine has started running. this is now circulating in your oil. Do you want metal shavings circulating for 5,000 miles? I don't! Take a look at your drain plug's magnet on a new engine....it's got lots of goodies on it!
I think the 5,000 mile break in you are referring to is simply that, these engines loosen up (like the LS1) at the 5k-10k mark. It has nothing to do with when to change the oil.
