Default a biger 4.8

Long time reader first time posting. My truck was born with a 4.8 with the idea that once the truck was payed for I would do an engin swap. No point in upgrading to the 5.3 when your going to swap anyways. My orginal idea was an aluminum 5.7 form an F-body but the more I read the more I find that the truck 6.0 (other than not being alunimum) is the beter way to go. So here are my qustions.

Are any years of the 6.0 beter than others?
(I know the later 4.8s and 5.3s have beter cams)

Whats the best way to deal with the ECM working right and passing Cal smog?

Any hindsight advice you would have if you have done the swap?

I personally think a true LS1 would be a great swap. Less weight and great power. They are proven performers too.

Dont go too agressive with your cam choice and keeps your cats. That should be fine for passing smog.

Do you have to modify the fuel rail to install an LS1? I heard the LS1 has different fuel injectors that are not compatible with the trucks. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

If I went with the 5.7LS1 I would keep the truck intake and maybe the heads also (the truck heads would give a small bump in compretion). However I do not now what will be needed to make this swap. I know the pullies are off and the water pump is different, but, what other things???

I understand that the 6.0 from 2001 up will fit. I dont know about the computer in either of the two swaps.

Any thoughts???

don't sweat the computer, you will just have to re-tune it with edit.

Keep the truck intake, injectors and rails. Unless you went crazy with your cam choice, its very likely that it will run OK without tuning. It will run better with it, but you can drive it just fine with the stock computer. Get it tuned whenever.

I don't think you will have a problem with any of your accessories fitting an LS1. I've heard about the one alternator bolt that doesnt fit, but it wasn't a problem to leave it out. Look for posts by "farmtruc". He put a stock LS1 in his mid-90s truck. It runs 13s with 3.42 gears and no locker.

The 6.0 would be a good choice, but don't think that you'll be giving up lots of power going with an LS1. The LS1 is solid.

The 6.0 seems to be cheaper than the 5.7 (plus I'll need to get ls1-edit)

Does anyone know anyone that had done the 5.7 swap, and has anyone ran the 4.8 computer on a 5.7 or 6.0?
