A metal heat shield that seals around the hood in my book is not as effective as a sealed box that pulls air right from the fenderwell. Volant also offers an air dam scoop that pulls air from the lower valance. Great way to get cold air into the engine.
The only thing about pulling air from the fender, is that the rear section of it near the firewall is wide open for hot air to get pulled in.

I had the UPD on my '01 and loved it! Had an Airaid prior to it and just a K&N panel filter prior to that (I know, I was indecisive). I noticed better throttle response and a bit more get up and go with the UPD. My $.02

You know, I'm not sure about that. I got mine in early '02. The only problem I had was that it was kind of a b!tch to get the tube on the throttle body and not bend the cr@p out of the fan shroud. It was a very tight fit but I got it on there (nice and tight). I never had any cracking or finish problems with mine.

A side note, DON'T over oil your filters when you clean them. I did this once and had to pull the MAF and use some electrical contact cleaner on the sensor because I had gunked it all up. I noticed because the idle and performance was all funky and off a bit.
