The DART 205s I had on my 418 gave me so much low end tq it wasnt even funny even with the 237/242 112 cam. Would spin all 4 so I think that was the perfect size head for what he is talking about.

I was just reviewing old posts of mine in the last couple of months and noticed that a couple of people asked about my cam choice. I'm going back to a Comp 212/218 114 LSA cam that I've owned for about three years and used to have installed on this truck. The P/N is 54-412-11. My current custom Comp cam is a 200/208 with 109 LSA. It's a great cam below 4,500 but then runs out of breath. The 212/218 was a great cam above 2,800 but lacked some low end grunt. I figure that I'll be fine with the 212/218 with the added displacement. I've already run the simulation on DynoSim.

I still think that cam is way too small for those cubes. My truck ate up the 237/242 cam I had, way more tq then the 5.3 on a 100shot.

Hi Steve

I thougt I might point you in this direction:
http://www.compcams.com/Community/Ar...?ID=1047065182

A Tq built 396 CBB, bench dynoed at 473 Tq @ crank and 386 Hp @ crank @ 5100.

They (the magazine) are using an Edelbrock performer kit.
Acording to Edelbrocks site, the only performer kit that fits CBB 396 has the "2162" cam.
Look at this page for details:
http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_...ifter_kits.pdf

This cam is very close to the recomendation Í got from Comp:
PART NO. 54-452-11

Also note that the CBB 396 also has a 4" stroke, but a slightly smaller bore than a LS 408.

To me this mean that if you select a LSx cyl head with simmilar flow as the CBB head in this build, it is very realsitic and easy to acive the Tq and Hp numbers of this CBB build.

I put the question to Gunnar at Patriot heads, what cyl head do you recomend for this kind o build?
I don´t have the recomendation at hand now, (wrong PC) and i don`t want to risk mis quoting him, but I do know that he recomended one of the "larger" heads in his range.

You can also look at Edelbrock and compare the flow of the different CBB heads, and you will se that a "race" lsx head flow like a good but nothing special CBB head. Those CBB heads sure use large valves....

With this consept, we are talking tow motor with capital T

This is a GM crate 454, just to show what the Tq curve loks like when we are talking 400+ cubes. This is a muscle car engine, but look at the Tq!
The cam they are using:
Camshaft duration (@.050 in)
211 degree intake / 230 degree exhaust
Camshaft lift (in):
.510 intake / .540 exhaust
Not a Tow cam maybe, but still impressive.

Too small? For someone who wants to race, definitely. For someone who wants to tow, it's perfect.

The Comp 212/218 in a 408 would behave a little better than a stock cam does in a 364 (6.0L). For someone who wants low-end grunt through 5800-6200 RPM, this would be an ideal choice. The gas mileage would be excellent as well.
