Default 6.0L Swap...does year matter?

I have a 2004 Chevy CCSB Z-71 4wd with the 5.3L engine. I'm thinking about swapping in a 6.0L or maybe start with a bare 6.0L block to build.

Does it matter what year the donor 6.0L engine or bare block is? Would a 2003 6.0L long block be compatible with my truck?

The 2003 has different length head bolts if that matters to you. Just letting you know if you plan to swap over ARP head bolts/studs or whatever. Everything else is the same I believe.

So I would just need the 2003 head bolts?

Not if you are buying a long block. I don't know your current set up so i was just giving you a heads up in case you have ARP studs or bolts in the 5.3

Any year Gen. III 6.0L bare block will be compatible. There were running changes though; just as was mentioned about the head bolts that would make one more or less practice for any given swap. It’s all been covered before, but for a recap for short block or long block use, the early ’99-’00 iron headed models had a longer crank designed for use with a 4L80 and doesn’t lend itself to swaps where a regular short crank engine has been residing. 2003 introduced coated piston skirts across the line to reduce engine noise, 2004 was supposedly the changeover year for the head bolts, and while there are reports of earlier models have been reported to found with them, 2005 and up models would have had floating-pin rods. While any year LQ9 is considered a great candidate for a swap, it is generally accepted that the 2005 and up LQ4 with the larger LQ9/LS2 style floating-pin rods is the preferred LQ4, as by then it would have already had all the upgrades that were made to the Gen. III platform already installed. Some items that were changed throughout the years, I don’t necessarily consider an upgrade over previous models, but still may be important if one was looking at swapping over a complete engine and accessories, such as the switch to a returnless fuel system.

So a 2005+ LQ4 would be the one to get. I found a place that offers complete dropout engines that include pretty much everything, so that'll be the year I look for if I do go that way.

Thanks for the help.
