Default 6.0 Upgrades

Hey guys I’m sure there are a lot of you that have the 6.0 and have done some upgrades’ to it. If you don’t mind or have any suggestions please feel free to post them up..

We have a 2004 Gmc 2500 crew auto 4:10 geared truck. The truck is 100% stock and SLOW. The current mileage is 4300 miles and the truck is about out of warranty do to years ( we got 10/03 ) Anyway i have been in the market for a truck for about 9 months now and cant find the right truck or a truck they will take my trade in on.

I would love to have diesel because of the power and tq but everyplace i have been they want almost $18-20K difference to go to a diesel and about $13-15K to go to a 8100 with a big block... Now with our 6.0 only having 4300 miles (and again its slow) Its almost as new as you can get. There is nothing wrong with the truck at all other than it seem to have no power. You cant even get the tires to spin in the rain by power braking or turning and going wide open. Some one said its the " torque management system" others say that has nothing to do with it.

Anyway back on the topic, If I wanted to spend say $8-10K on parts on the truck what hp and tq do you think we could get and still be reliable. I know on the GTO's and corvette just a head and cam package will get 400 wheel hp and 450-500 Tq.
Also i was wondering if anyone has turboed the 6.0 or put a supercharger like a whipple or procharger on this motor.

We put a STS on a friends dad 1500 GMC with the 5.3 and it did 400 wheelhp and 435 tq just with the turbo alone.

At any rate, What are you guys doing to make more power, It seem to me it makes more sense for me to ad a blower or turbo than to trade truck with this one only have 4300 miles.

Thanks

500 can be had at the wheels pretty easily with a turbo. STS remote mounted and Livernois front mounted our probably the most common.

The radix is an option, but I would wait awhile until the larger 122 compressor is avaialble and testing is completed. That should be good for 500 rwhp as well.

What are your plans? More power for towing or just to go faster? The reason I ask is because the turbos might not be the best choice for towing.

towing, and just to be faster.. but for the most part towing. I have to cars we pull but not at the same time. Most of my loads are light ( under 10K pounds).

all kidding aside, this trucks is so slow with or with out a load its not funny. Unloaded it slower than a 05 F150 crew 4x4 with the 4.6 Its even slower than my mother 5.3 suburban.

I Think it has to do with the trans or ecu. it pull on the free way from 60-99 a lot quicker than it does from 0-60

to be honest with you, im more for down low hp and tq like you get in the big blocks and diesels. I just cant see the money difference to trade up to the same truck. Gm has not chaged any body or interior parts from our 04.

If you want down low power nothing beets the Radix, But like said above, I would wait a few weeks and see how the testing goes on the M122. A custom tune would help your stock truck in the mean time

If you want to free up some power just like Mark mentioned a custom tune will be a great place to begin with. Defenitley will make a difference on your 6.0. I very popular tuner here is Nelson's click on his icon on the right side of your screen for his web site.

thanks for the info, It says on there web page they can take 80% of the torque management off. Do you think this will cause any problems later down the road. Im not to worried about it but at the same time with the luck i have i would have them remove it and next day the trans would die.

The mods in my signature have made an incredible difference, its so much faster now with 35's then stock w/ 265's. Jesse at Wait4meperformance did a hell of a job on my tune, the pacesetter long tubes made a nice improvement as well. Those are definetely the 2 biggest mods you can do for relatively cheap that will give you considerable gains.

I think ill start out with having the torque management removed. Then do intake and headers and see what that does. It looks like a blower is around 5500 bucks.

This may be dumb advise, but..........it would probably be better to put the the intake and headers on before tuning. Tuning after the install would be less expensive as you won't have to tune twice. If your looking for more after that, you might consider upgrading the heads and cam. A higher stall converter will also help the low speed driveability as it will let the engine operate in an rpm range that outputs higher torque.

Keep up posted on your progress.

I spoke with Nelson and he says he has no problem removing 100% of the TM on the 2500's. He said this would in no way harm the 4l80 tranny.
