Yep, hate to say it, cuz I love the old gen sbc, but the 5.3 in stock form will support/handle more HP then a built 355, will do it for alot less.

Its all in the heads. Put great flowing heads on a 355 short block and it will run as good as a LS engine. Then you get to a point where your stock SBC block will start to flex or even crack. The LS block is a deep skirt design and is much more rigid overall. The LS engines do package nice and have a pretty nice intake and injection setup right from the factory as well. I still prefer a nice small block though.

What have you got now for an engine? My 95 was just a tired 350 with ported vortec heads and a LT4 hot cam with a single plane high rise 2 barrel intake and a 454 TBI throttle body. It never did run quite right with the antiquated fuel injection system but on the days it was running good it ran strong and the sound was incredible. No LS engine will ever sound that good.

I was a die hard SBC, BBC guy and you will never get me to build another one again.
its ALOT easier and cheaper to build a LS
my little 325ci LS makes more power then my dads cammed with head work 427ci big block.
he is blown away just how easy it is to make power out of these little things
