Talking 4wd/awd guys, look what someone gave me

this is a front diferential from a 2500HD that had a duramax in it. it spun the outer pinion bearing and messed up the race land area. they were going to throw it away i hope to at least get some measurements with it to see if one would fit in a 1500, it is seriously beefy and i have my doubts. if it would fit i think i could fix it, maybe knurl the race area or get a larger race and have it machined larger.

right off the bat i can tell you the flanges are larger, i will have some measurements of a few things soon, waiting for my truck to dry off a little, it is snowing here.

If ya end up using it I would accept your old one if you decide to give it away! I am still toying with the idea of converting my truck to AWD.

it doesn't look promising, the flanges are much larger, the over all width is at least 1" wider. i can't tell by looking at it if it would bolt in but it looks prety tight, there isn't much room between the 1500 unit and the oil pan, if it does fit it will be hanging down 2" lower than the 1500 one. hmmmm

Looks very familiar.

I just had mine out of my truck all torn to pieces to install my eaton front e locker. The smaller IFS housing uses an 8.25 inch ring gear. I've always thought that the 2500HD 4x4 trucks would be nice with a solid front axle. They can be converted, but it is very expensive.

There are no lockers available for the 8.25" diff that is in the 1500s, but there are a good amount of options out there for the 9.5" from the 2500s. I dont think you will be able to get it to fit without a lot of work. If you do get it to work id put a detroit locker in there or just weld up the spider gears if you only plan on using the 4x4 when going in a straight line.

no there was never any other IFS front diff used either
