If you got it cheap enough punch that bitch out to an LS1. For your desired power level, forged is not necessary.

Sonic, hot tank, line bore, bore, polish crank you're probably looking at about $800.

Get yourself a set of LS1 pistons/rods out of a 04' GTO ($150) and throw a new set of rings in ($50) and some Katech rod bolts ($200). All new bearings ($300), ARP main studs ($200), head bolts ($50), LS9 headgaskets ($100), HD timing set from Yank ($72). Cam kit from thunder racing or TSP ($600) + LS6 oil pump ($150). Then just get a set of worked 799/243s.

Sell off all the stock 5.3 **** for a couple hundred bucks.

More cubes = more better

Instead of spending that much money, he could get a used 5.7 and throw a cam in it. Or a used 6.0'

FWIW, I was at my machine guys shop today, inquiring about prices. For a bore/hone, tanked, new plugs, install cam, crank bearings(me supplying them) Polishing the crank was quoted about 500.

I have a hard time trusting used engines unless you can physically hear them running. It's peace of mind to me to have a freshly built iron LS1 over the unknown... at least imo anyways. I plan to do what I just told him with a L33 that I picked up for $450, just need new hole plugs

LS1 pistons/rods can be had over on LS1tech all day long for around $100. I simply suggested the ones from a GTO as I believe they're the LS2 style pins/rods. You'll have to verify that though. If you search the classifieds long enough you'll find a set of low mileage pistons/rods still together and marked so you don't have to get them rebalanced, which could save you $250~.

Even better

Btw, I forgot to add to that list a set of LS7 lifters, SDPC sells them for around $120.
