1stTimeBuilder is Building My 1st EFI Engine
#1
Hi, I have always looked at this thread and have really taken all of the information that i have learned to heart. This is one of the best places to find info on everything that i want to know.
That being said, I have my 2003 Chevrolet Silverado that currently has a 4.8 engine in it. I have just under 300,000 miles on it and have replaced just about everything on it except for the engine. I really want to keep it because it is worth so much more to me than it would be if i sold it. I recently just bought a 5.3 engine for under $300 and thought it would be a great project engine for me to begin on. Please keep in mind here that i have done 5 carb engines prior so i do know my way around a block pretty well but like i said this will be my first EFI and first performance truck.
So, here is what i was planning:
boring the block to 3.89
cam: 226/226
Replacement rods
Roller rockers (unsure of which ones)
I have the stock heads (dunno which ones to select or keep these and port & polish)
Edelbrock hi rise EFI
Hooker Headers
Cat Delete
Tune (trying to find a place if Dallas, TX)
Performance trans (i have stories about the 4L60E that would make your heads turn)
Wiesco Forged Pistons
Replacing the bearings (i have seen so many choices when it comes to the bearings, what would you prefer and why?)
K&N Filter
3k stall torque
Y-Pipe exhaust with 6 in race muffler
Bulletproof rear end
More or less i am hoping to supercharge the engine lateron down the road after i learn from my mistakes. I want to be able to make some mistakes so i can learn and enjoy this process. Of course there are going to be issues but since it will be an out of vehicle engine build it doesnt have to abide by any schedule.
I dont have any kind of budget again because there is no rush so if it takes a year then that is cool but i really would like to have this as my toy truck.
I didnt go after the 6.0 because i didnt want to move the motor mounts and i would love to really have to do an extreme build. Also, come to think about it...does any one know of a machine shop to trust in the Dallas area???
I do appreciate any help and as always i will stand corrected should i have gotten anything wrong performance wise. I would love some honest opinions.

alright, i forgot a couple of things like that 90mm TB and the X-Link or the racing style temp. I love the little things and of course i missed a few things like bluprinting the block or the sonic test which i will do but the basic things will be done on the engine. I am more or less looking for the performance side.

I am not sure why you think you would have to move the motor mounts for the 6.0L They are Physically the same dimension externally.
The 5.3 is a great platforum.
You can have the stock heads ported by one of our vendors. I believe both WCCH and SDPC have a stage 2 package starting at $899 with exchange and the come with all new parts.
You really don't need roller rockers but if they make you feel good, then get which ever ones you like better.
Personally I would run the stock arms and recommend the Comp Cams 13702-KIT trunion upgrade.
As far as the rest, the pistons, rods, headers and so on parts that you Choose are more of a personal choice. If your going forced induction you may want to get a cam spec'd specific to the package you will be putting together.
Other wise have fun and good luck!!!

I had read on this forum that you would need to move the motor mounts but not everything you read is true. I really appreciate you telling me that. I know that i can pick up a 6.0 block from Texas Performance for under 1k. I think i might do that!!!
Adds to the excitementStage 2 is what i would like to go with. I still am on the fence on which application would be awesome but i think going and talking with someone will help a whole lot.
I agree that roller rockers arent a necessity but i always liked them and wanted to give them a shot but you do have a good point with the Comp Cams upgrade.
Thanks again for the help and your insight.

Once i start building i'll upload the photos and see what you all think.
