Default 1990 454SS...Need some knowledge

I'm looking to purchase one and need to know if there are any issues associated with these trucks I should look out for. Any help is much appreciated.

i'd go to www.fullsizechevy.com/forum

ask there, there are a couple of guys that own them on that board and i'm sure they'll be of more help than us newer truck guys.

I used to have one and never had ANY problems with it other than dead batteries and that only happened after it sat in the paint shop for almost 2 years.

I sold it to my best friend and he still continues to mod it and has not had any problems with the motor or drivetrain yet. He keeps all that stock.

They are pretty decent trucks, thats why I responded to the truck you are refering to but it sounded pretty beat up to me. A really clean one will run around $11k.

With just a set of Doug Thorley headers, cat-back and a chip I ran 14.7 in 100deg heat on 315/35/17 Comp T/As. Not great for newer trucks but pretty quick back in 93.

Now do some porting of the heads and a new cam and it's off the hook.

Yeah, I checked out the truck on Thursday. It is very rough. It will need a lot of work. Since the radiator is cracked it is hard to evaluate the car as it stands. I need to find a mechanic in his area to go through it pretty good

My buddy back in high school had one. The things I remember most about it was it took $25 to cruise around town on saturday night. And I could always stay right beside him when we raced. (I had a '84 Z28 with the HO 305).

I had one a few years ago (90 454SS), and it was actually really reliable for me... I had it from 80k to 100k, the only thing I did was basic maintenance. I took excellent care of mine, but most I see now are really rough. I would personally buy one again for the 6k price range, but not more than that. I only got anywhere from 5-13 mpg with it, because it is a 3 speed with 3.73s. That is a lot of gas for limited performance that it had.... I could beat my friends 91z with 305, but my friends 88'gt would stomp me everytime.... Newer trucks are a lot faster, and for 11k you can find a decent 99/00 sb reg cab truck that will out perform the 454ss. I hated the maroon interior that came in it, but other than that it was a decent looking stock truck!! I have been looking for one for a daily driver, since I only drive a few miles a day now... In conclusion, they are a decent truck, and have a very strong transmission and rearend! It has a lot of torque (385tq for 90') to about 45 mph, but then it falls off from then on....You will be dissapointed with quarter mile runs though, because the 454 is not set up right for anything but towing power. BTW, I sold mine in the fall of 99' with 98k miles for $6,000 and it was in mint condition (looked like it just came off the show room floor) Good luck!
