A locker will be stronger and will have spool like traction in a straight line, but will have open diff charecteristics in turns. They can be noisy and also a little squirley in the rain, but no more so than the eaton really.
I always sell the Eaton for the average street/strip guy, but for your application I dont think it is going to be a long term solution although it is a big improvement over stock.
You should also consider a solid spacer rather than the cruch sleeve and welding the axle tubes. The T/A covers are also an improvement but they are pricey, the other 2 things are cheap and easy. The solid spacer is usually under $5 and the welding is just about free if you have a welder.

how does the solid spacer work? do you just make it the same length as the existing crush sleve?

It is machined to a nominal length. You can also get them with a shim pack to fine tune your pinion preload. It just replaces the crush sleeve with a hardened piece of steel.

To clarify, and for search posterity, the Powertrax No-Slip drops right in. The Powertrax Lock-Right, despite what several parts houses say, only works in the OBS trucks

There is an application for newer trucks coming soon, it may even be out now. Been a while since I was at work to check though. The interior of the 8.6 case is actually slightly larger, and there is also 2 different cases available for the 8.6 with 2 different interior dimensions, the earliest one which was only used for about a year will use the old style.
Also, the Powertrax/Lock Rite is a completely different style than a Detroit Locker since you dont even need to remove the case from the truck, just the spider gears. Detroit makes an EZ Locker which is similar, but I dont care for any of those style diffs in high stress applications.

Summit Racing said they were shipping me the Lock-Right for the 8.6", but when I went to install it, the locker was about 3/16-1/4" too wide for the 8.6" open case. I then found the 1921-LR part number to match the 8.5" OBS rear

$15 worth of fluid and gasket down the er
