Default Trans Dying after 1/8 mile with no fluid?...

I had a the transmission cooler line blow off yesterday. Once I noticed the smell to the point of where I pulled over was no more than an 1/8mile. I fixed the line, put two quarts of trans fluid(stick looked okay) Drove slow 3 miles home and parked it. I checked trans fluid level the next morning and it appeared good, actually on the hot line.

Today,(I only drive 5 miles to work) it is sluggish shifting into gear sometimes. Sometimes accelerating to highway speeds, slowly, the engine RPM climbs 500-600RPM, but the truck doesn't accelerate accordingly. Sometimes, the converter does not lock lie usual either.

EDIT: I forgot to add in there, while cruising, I can let off the accelerator and as soon as it begins to coast, there is a grinding type noise I can feel in the floorboard but no where else. I can hardly hear it but feel it on my feet plenty.

Is it possible the is air on something that hasn't worked its way out?

Or do these sound like symptoms of pending doom?

The plastic radiator end cap broke and I replaced the radiator. Out of four cooler lines (two oil, two trans) only one of the little retaining clips gave me trouble, and I think that was the one. After five days of driving it finally came off I guess.

I was just wondering...it seems that the line popping off happens fairly often....could start a fire too?

Should not have been hot at all. I drove one mile to a store, parked for ten minutes, then 1/8 mile later had to pull over.

Unfortunatly driving low on fluid even 1/8th mile can do considerable damage due to low presure and with a line off there would also be no lube to the planets bushings etc and the converter would empty.
I am afraid its not good. I have see the forward clutch completely fried after only a single try moving a car with low line or fluid.
