Is there any particular type of scanner that I should be looking for at a shop?

Thank you, I appreciate the help.

most should have one capable. It will be much larger than what autozone and such use

several companies make them so any local reputable shop should have one

Went to a "Tranny" shop today to get in scanned.
They offered free diagnostics scans, well that should have been a sign.
I wont bore you with what happened. All I have to say is I made an appointment with a reputable shop that deals specifically with GM and GM only. Unfortunately its a week out, so next Monday at 9:30am is the big day.
They have a real diagnostic scan tool

The results are in, hah. They were using HPTuners, nothing came up on the scanner. I guess if no codes have been thrown, they cant see anything.

He couldn't feel the shudder/vibration when he went out so, he asked me to go along for a ride. We went for a cruise so I could point out what was going on. I pointed it out and he finally noticed it. What he did notice was the converter was not locking or unlocking when driving at speeds and pressing the brakes. He asked how my MPGs were, I responded "terrible", he said "that's why".
Basically, long story short. I ordered a new converter, larger cooler, shift kit and he is going to tune it for me (engine and trans).
I'll be dropping it off Thursday for him to do it Friday.

Haha, no kidding.
I'm hoping they don't find anything in the fluid.
I'll sleep well after it's fixed

I will not be sleeping well, I spoke too soon.
I'm not quite sure what to do know. I just dumped enough money into it to buy a new tranny and not only is it still doing it but now its more pronounced and its doing it at around 30-35mph.
This will be the most expensive tranny I have ever owned.

I have a random question. = Is it necessary to retune for a new converter?

If your TCC was bad you would have thrown a P0740 for TCC lockup failure. The absence of the code would seem to indicate that perhaps the diagnostic method wasn't the best, or the guy with the laptop didn't know what he was doing. If he was using HPTuners he should have commanded lockup to rule out an issue.

Excuse my ignorance but I am not technologically savvy , when you say
he should have commanded lockup to rule out an issue
, what exactly do you mean by that?
I was standing by him when he was scanning it, he didn't do anything out of the ordinary. Actually, he didn't do anything. He plugged it in and let it run its course and that's it. The only thing he said was, "no codes". I responded back "so if it does not throw a code, you cant see anything" he response "yup".

Oh. I thought you meant the guy you took on a test drive was using HPTuners. The person that decided that the torque converter clutch (TCC) was not working should have tested it with his diagnostic tool during the drive.
