Default thoughts of a th400 install

i am having thoughts of installing a built TH400 when my 4L65E blows up. I have a 2000 silverado ECSB 2WD truck. i am buying a SFI approved flywheel from Circle D that is drilled to fit the TH350 and 400.

my question is other than the drive shaft and trans crossmember what all is involved with this swap? is there a way to keep my stock speedo working and not have major issues?

what rearend gears? for a dd i wouldn't recommend it w/o od. if its weekend driver i wouldn't put anything else in it. i just did a thread on my swap. i had 5 speed tho. if you don't mind losing abs you can use wire off one of the wheels and just tune to get it right. play around w/ tire size and gear ratio #'s. i think rossler transmission has a speedo adapter that will work too.

I had a th400 in my truck for a while with 4.10's. It was fine for the street and fun for drag racing but I didn't even like to drive it on the freeway to work. I never got the speedo hooked up to work properly but it wan't a big deal to me. I wen't from a NV3500 to TH400 to 700r4 to 4L80e. I've had a little dose of everything.

see i can build my own th400 but i want nothing to do with the 80e build. but it does seem that its 3k for a complete th400 swap. so im trying to see whats more cost effective. i could sell my built 65e and stall on here and buy a stock 80. what kind of power is an 80e good for?

Buy a junkyard 80E and put it in. Way less money, plenty of power handling. I don't know what the deal is with the TH400 bandwagon lately, since we're not dealing with drag trucks that are too heavy for glides.

I would definitely go with the 80e. I love the electronically controlled trannies far better than the vacuum and cable operated. But that's just my opinion.

I guess I should have asked what your goals are with the truck? specs?

you won't want 4.10's behind a th400. i run 3.42 and its cranking pretty hard at 65ish. i'd go w/ 400. you can get a build one for under $1500. wouldn't go to trouble of swapping tranny for a junkyard 80e. build 80e aren't cheap. i have manual rev. valve body and shift it myself. no worry about vaccum or electronics. th400 is about 50# lighter too.

What's the problem with a junkyard 80E with a shift kit? It doesn't need to be built to hold power. Some of the fastest full-size's run them. I can understand a TH400 for a truck that doesn't have any miles put on it, but not for a truck that's driven. I do agree with you on the gearing though, and you can save the weight by switching, even though 50 lbs. can be taken off elsewhere if you really need it that bad.

i take it as he doesn't drive it a lot, i would go w/ a th400 and 3.42's out back. yes a 4l80e will hold some power ,rated at 450ftlbs i believe. thats a lot for a stock tranny. depends on what hp goals are. i paid $1400 for a th400 that they say is good to 1200hp.
