thinking about installing gears/detroit myself...... help appreciated.

ok, so my rear end guy doesn't seem to be available to do it for like 3 weeks. i changed out gears and a posi once, but we didn't measure anything. It was in an older truck, and we kinda weren't worried. I'm not throwing caution to the wind on my '04. so... walk me through this.
i'm told i need to check pinion depth.... but i'm also told that if i re-use the stock pinion shim and my wear pattern is good....... then it's not an issue.
second: backlash...... i have no idea how to measure it, or what to to get.
can anyone help me?
