I feel just the opposite. Around town my truck feels the same way it always has. I only notice the lower (numerically) 1st gear at WOT.

I didnt say you wouldnt notice it, I just said most dont care because they expect it. I like the higher gear of the 60e driving around town since I dont need as much throttle to get moving.

You also had giant tires too. Personally I liked the 80e around town, much less shifting, most of the time it went from 1st to 4th.

People make too big of a deal out of 1st gear. Think of it this way, GM put that gear in every th400, and 4l80e for years. So basically if you got something heavy duty that was designed for towing/hauling/getting out of the hole, that is the gear you ended up with. Also think of how many people have done a 4l80e swap, and initially worried about the gear. Now think about how many people have made the switch back because of the gear (I would bet it is extremely rare if at all). And I have never heard of anyone swapping their 80e out for a 60e because it didn't get out of the hole good enough.

Go for a test drive in something with an 80e and see what you think before you make the swap.

Lots of good info on here i figured you guys might be able to help. Im dropping an lq9 in my truck towards the end of the year i will be running a 3200 stall and a decent sized cam, dd it 20-50 miles a day with a couple wot's in between. Would you guys recommend building the 65e before dropping it in or going straight for the 80? Thank you.

If I had the 80 with stock converter on a stock 4.8 it would suck with 1st. As it was the 60 was bad. Now with everything done I don't hook at all in 1st even from 50 mph. 2nd gear goes by real fast too. Driving around makes no difference, I just hate converter unlocking when you let off gas. Its annoying with the triple disc.

It's your call. A properly built 60E should hold up for what you want to do. But with the 80E, you can likely be a little more abusive to it with less chance of it breaking.

Good to know id do a servo, shift kit and a fat cooler. My neighbors colleague would fully build it for 1500, but if i could get away with servo/shift id do that. Thanks
