Suburban 4x4 axle swap
#1
I have a '69 4x4 Suburban that I am fixing up a little at a time. It is the ol'Lady's daily driver so we get a lot of highway miles; so the higher the gears the better. This is our light duty camping rig also, so that is the only time the 4x4 even gets close to a work out, because that's the only time its driven in 4x4 unless it is snowy or icy weather. Currently it has a 350/sm465/205 and I think 373 gears. It has the old closed style first generation axles with drum brakes all the way around. I would like to swap to disc front brakes and modern style axles but have not been able to find a list of vehicles whose axles would swap with my 1969 K10 (?73-87-91?). If you have a Hollanders manual or something like it or know of a list of axles that would fit, and perhaps what parts I might need for the retro fit, or even a good 4x4 website that has a tech section on this swap I would appreciate knowing about it. Ideally, after getting away from the front drum brakes, and perhaps some new 307 gears I'll start hunting a NV4500 or a 6 speed that will work to improve the highway driving. I see a lot of guys building Dana 60 and 70 axles for their 4x4s, but I don't need the heavy duty, so maybe I can find a cheap set of take offs if I new what to look for!!! thanks
