Default Slack in driveline. Gears or true trac??

Well i have a question. I definitely have some slack in the rear end. I am not sure if it is the gears or true trac. I can rotate the pinion yoke a decemt amount back and forth with the tires on the ground. I will find out exactly how much this weekend. I previously thought it was just worn out gears, but the amount of slack got me thinking it may be the true trac. So i am wondering how much the pinion yoke should rotate freely without the tires moving.

I'll say gears. I felt the same and I'll be replacing a r&p this weekend. Opened it up to find a crap ton of silver stuff.

Maybe 1/4 inch, just a guess, dont have anything to go look at right now. slack in your gears from backlash, some play in the truetrac, and play in your axles in the truetrac. Replaced Josh's truetrac a few weeks ago and his case around the gears inside was busted and cracked.

Thanks Tyler, I will pop off the cover this weekend and take a look. I just wanted to make sure prior to ordering some new gears.

yea, theres a few things in there that could lead to the slack.
Ive seen some that would turn almost half turn
lets just say goin from drive to reverse you get a loud clunk...

Mine was the same way. I figured it was giving me a bad vibration which ended up being a warped flexplate. Subscribed to see your results.

My rear-end has alot of slack too, but i still have the stock G80 in mine.. I try not to beat on it too much LOL.. I'm hoping when i do my tru trac swap it will clean up the slack alot cause i get alot of clunking back there.. Let us know what you find.

I have seen several true trac rear ends with a good bit of play. Gears tight as can be, yet still a little slop

if set up correctly it shouldn't have alot of slop.backlash should be 0.005"- 0.010"...when i did mine i set mine at 0.009" and no noises whatsoever

I can also rotate my wheels my wheels a decent amount in either direction before the other side starts moving. Checked the oil a while back and it looked good.
