Hey guys, i have a 2001 GMC with a 4/6 drop and i really dont like the ride. I was just wondering what i could do to it to make it a smooth ride. I was reading in another thread about trimming the bumpstops, but i never did get any helpfull information on what those bumpstops where for or if i trimming them would help out a little. Basically i want to know what i can do to maintain the drop and have a stock ride.

What shocks are you running? The bumpstops in the back will be gone as long as you installed the notch (which I hope you did)

Biggest fix to a "bad ride"that i've heard of is to put on the correct shocks. Also, how was the front lowered? When I had my 4/6 with DJM lower control arms and a flip kit I thought the ride was very good. I also had Doestch Tech shocks.

 

no notch. My friend did the drop, dont know how but he dropped it. All i know is i had 2" shackles before the drop. Really rough ride, going to park the daily driver and fix(or at least try) the ride quality. Any more info on how i can make it smooth, setups wise?? Thanks for your time.

 

I think you must be riding on the bump stops in the rear. Take a look and see if the axle is close to or touching the bump stops. I have not done a 4/6 on a 1500 but from what I hear you have to do a c-notch. Looks like you might have to investigate putting a notch in if you want your ride back. If the stops are gone you might be banging the axle on the frame. If you do the c-notch and get the correct length shocks and maybe shock extenders you should be able to improve the ride quite a bit. There are also helper bags you can put in the back to stop it from banging but they will firm your ride up some.

C-notch and shocks are available from Belltech, DJM and McGaughys among others.

 

If you are going to run a 4/6 you are going to have to run a notch, no ifs, ands, or buts abouts it.

Why is it rough you ask? because you have NO rear suspension! I did my 4/6 one evening and the notch the following day. I had literally maybe 1" of travel back there without the bumpstops...if you still have them, your axle is on them. You need at least 3-4" of suspension travel to have a comfortable ride, so do the DJM or Belltech notch and call it a day, you might be surprised. Also, get good shocks.

Come to think of it, I bet he just pulled a leaf spring plus your shackles If you don't have a flip kit, get one. DJM makes a good 4/6. This is a wonderful example of why you don't let "your friends" drop your truck without knowing what parts they are doing or how they are doing it. For all you know you have cut springs up front and pulled leaf springs out back. That would equal one crap-o ride.

 

I have done all the drops on my trucks myself with my friends, and if you are going to go 6" in the rear, you have to go with a notch, it's not hard and doens't affect the towing abality or anything. I had a 95 ext cab with a 5/8 drop on it and it rode like a dream with the proper suspension travel in the rear and good shocks. My friends couldn't believe that it rode that good being as low as it was. It's all about the products and procedures. If you use good stuff and do it right, you will have good results.
