Default Rear End is making noises on turns! (OPEN DIFF)

Hey everyone

Truck is a 2000 Sierra 1500 4wd, 3.73 OPEN diff.

Problems are while in 2wd

Today while doing a U turn i got a very noticeable jerk and bang. i wasn't sure what was going on, so i started driving very cautiously and didn't notice any noises or jerks until i had to turn again. from then on out every turn i took would bang and jerk...whether it was a 90* turn or a long sweeping turn it was obvious the rear diff did not want to let one tire spin faster then the other. i also get a lot of bangs and clunks when i go from drive to reverse.

Does it sound like i need to replace the entire carrier gear/diff? Im new to working on differentials, but not working on cars (done motor, cam and trans swaps on other vehicles, this one is stock). so any advice you can give me on things to look at when i pull off the cover, and if the guts can be changed out with out any specialty tools / knowledge

I figure if its bad, might as well upgrade... Is this everything i would need to upgrade to a true trac? or are there more parts in the diff?

spider gears are out.

You can pick those up for 100 bucks and the install is easy as cake.

EDIT: well they went up, theyre about 130 now from summit

It all depends on how much money he's got and what hes capable of installing.

Spider gears are cheap and the install is easy and requires no re calibrating the rear ring and pinion.

shift grind, if you have the money to pay for parts and labor on gears and locker, do it. But if you're on a budget, just replace the spider gears.

Thanks for the help, and pics...i will pull the cover off asap to take a look at it. i would much rather go with the easier to install and cheaper option. The truck is stock (except tune) and will never see more then electric fans and a intake, its a work vehicle, my other car is the toy.

Just personally, I'd say the limited slip is a must! To me it's invaluable, especially in the winter. But if you got this far with an open diff, I guess you'll be just fine without one.
