Default Rear axle gear oil temperature

Does anybody run a gear oil temp gauge?
Thats one thing ive never seen in a half ton.
Is seen them in every 18wheeler ive been in, but they do have a bit more stress put thru them to generate heat.

Im fixin to start towing some more and got curious bout the temps.

Ive got a jegs girdle cover on it now, and i think it has a temp port on it. Cause its too small and high to be a drain.

Thoughts?

I know I've read a couple magazine articles where they saw a 20 degree temp drop after swapping to an after market aluminum cover but I can't remember the operating temps before or after. I'll try to find one of the articles.

I put an infrared thermometer on the bottom of my differential when I was breaking in my gears. The hottest I saw directly after an easy 30 minute drive was 130 degrees. I will check after running it hard in a few weeks and see what I get.

Friend of mine bought a hotshotting truck with a rear end temp gauges. Normal driving unloaded it hardly ever moved the gauge. Loaded up and driving hard I think it got to about 160*. That was in a 3500 cummins dodge.

The big Dana rear in my F450 will get up to 185ish after a long drive but it's also dragging around 17K worth of truck and my equipment. Plus this rear end has been noisy as hell since it was new.... Probably has a lot to do with it. I'm just gonna drive it till she pukes, or they put me in another truck, whichever comes first lol.

I bought a sending unit to put in the rear to attach to a temp gauge in the cab. Still debating doing it though. I don't tow so im not sure if there is a point really.
