Default rack and pinion to steering box?

Just curious, I had an '01 Silveado with rack and pinion steering gear. It was totaled 2-29-08. My new/used replacement is an '04 silverado, and it has a steering box. Why did GM switch back? Is it something stupid like they found a bunch of steering boxes in a warehouse and just decided to use them up? Also what could make the steering pump squeal only while turning left?

Is you new truck 4 wheel drive? Your belt may be slipping to cause the squealing noise, does it happen when the truck is steered all the way to the lock?

on 99 through 2007 classic trucks 2 wheel drive use rack&pinion. 4 wheel drive uses steering boxes.

Its not 4wd, and it only makes the sound while turning left and not all the way to the lock. Just a little little left turn pressure starts the sound and it goes away even while still turning.

Hmm, no leaks would seem to indicate the pump is OK.

I will say again, stock from the factory, 2 wheel drive is rack & pinion, 4x4 is steering box.
