Default question about front diff.

my tahoe is awd being that it is my front diff is always engaged and does not have the actuator on the front to disengage it. being so if i were to, say put in a autotrack t-case would it be ok as long as i didn't use the autotrack part or does the front diff have to disengage to use 2wd? i'm considering doing this just because it robs power and gas for every day driving. or would a SSS t-case be better? what kind of milage do those guys get? better than 14 highway stock?
