I feel you there. Once I finish this I won’t be doing gears for a while 😂. I’ll do em’ again, rest assured haha

 

If you put some drag between the pinion & ring gear when rotating you'll get better contact on the painted teeth. Rotate the pinion while holding the ring with a shop rag works for me.

Hello everyone!

So I got access to a press and got the original shim for the pinion. It was 0.034” or so.
I assembled it all together and put the gear paint on at 3 points. Here was my conclusion.
Point 1 looked great. Not perfect but great.
Point 2 was completely out of spec and it said I need to add thickness.
Point 3 was in the middle. It was decent but not perfect.

Now I’ve had this issue for the last few weeks, and I’ve put the carrier in and out at least 4 dozen times, so I don’t think it’s cockeyed. The shims are straight, and the bearings look good. The pinion is at 20” preload or so, and the right pinion depth for now. Backlash isn’t excessive.
I took apart the ring and pinion twice now to make sure it’s even and flat. It all looks great, but the markings still show otherwise.

I’d appreciate any input, ideas, or insight. Thanks guys!
