Yep, definitely intermittent. I just drove to walmart and back earlier and it was definitely back. I held it in 2nd to about 4500 accelerating moderately and when I went to third it went up 500rpm, then dropped down to third. It wasn't doing that yesterday either. I'll be finding out what's going on hopefully tomorrow around noon.

Ok, here what's going on. My dad talked to the guy and then called me and told me what he said. I'll give you my best understanding of it.

He said first of all the MAF is screwed up. He said everything lead him to it and it is messed up (I got 11.2mpg on my last tank of gas if that suggests he's right.... lol). He also said the filter is soaked in oil (I'm pretty sure it's a K&N, but I'm SURE the guys knows about them being oiled, so I'm sure he means a different kind of oil). Because of those two things somehow the transmission has been messed up and it is starting to slip a bit going in to third like I said. Does any of that add up or make sense? He told us we couldn't drive it home because we would burn up the transmission if we did (and I've been driving it for a couple weeks and you can baaarely feel it slip).

I don't know a whole lot about how the MAF could be tied to a screwing up transmission, but do you guys?

??? IMO, definately get a second opinion!!! Especially with him stating to not drive it home or it'll burn the trans up. Sounds like a scare tactic to me....just to get you to spend $$$ at his shop. Mine has been slipping quite a bit in almost every gear. I had problems at 214k miles and currently have almost 216k on it. I've been driving it to work, taking it easy on it, driving no more than 75mph on the freeway and shifting no more than at 2000 -2500 rpms. I had no choice to continue to drive it, being my only vehicle and not having all the $. I'll have it the shop on Friday the 7th, finally have $1700 for the rebuild.

Like I said get another mechanic to look at it and get a second opinion. A lot of places like to "sell" work that may not be necessary. For example, I started going to a local shop in town because they were a lot closer than my mechanic is (he's in another town about 30 miles away). I had problems with the AC and they replaced the belt a few times. Well the belt kept coming off and I went back and they told me the compressor is bad and that it'll cost $1200. Screw that!!! Called up my mechanic and he told me it's more likely the belt tensioner for the AC. He fixed it for $100!!!

Wow, yeah it sounds funny to me too. I just didn't know if there was possibly some sort of connection I had no idea about. What kind of gas mileage do you (or these truck normally) get? This was the first tank on this truck after i got it, but I only got 11.2 mpg, so being that low does make me wonder about the MAF. I don't know if that's normal though. It was maybe 50/50 in-town/highway. Maybe a little more in-town.

I guess I didn't fully comprehend your previous post and was just advising on a second opinion. But after re-reading it, it sort of makes sense on what he said.
But, I honestly couldn't tell you if the MAF has any adverse effects on the transmission.

I think what he meant on the "filter is soaked in oil" is that if you over-oil the K&N it could and will screw up the MAF. That's why a lot of companies have switched to a dry type filter that needs no oil.

I have been told by my mechanic that, in my case, a leaking fuel pressure regulator will cause the truck to run rich. That would also make the tranny shift wierd.

So, maybe the MAF is bad and is running rich or lean and advertly affecting the shifts???

I get an average of 15 -16mpg with mostly highway and some city. Lately, I have been getting 17 -17.5mpg taking it slow and easy on the trans.

Ok, well both of those numbers are a lot higher than mine. haha. The K&N shouldn't be over-oiled either. It was just a new filter that was stuck in there and it hasn't ever been cleaned and re-oiled so it shouldn't be that. I don't know exactly what he meant. Oh well. My dad is paying for it since he said he would make sure everything was fixed before I got it, so as long as it gets fixed I won't be complaining.

Heh, it all came down to him telling us it was going to be $2100 minimum for a fix, or possibly $2300 (so we figure at least $2500, lol). Soooo we picked the truck up from him and said sorry. haha. Next option is either a used replacement, or if all else fails a level 3 from FLT for $1000 less than fixing ours back to stock .

WTF!?!?!?! I guess I was right in my first reply, LOL!!! $2300 is way too expensive!!! I'll be getting mine back tomorrow (CAN'T WAIT) and it only cost $1550.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm thinking with mine. He's definitely not doing it if we rebuild it. Let me know how yours is when you get it
