Is it and aftermarket converter since 700r4 converters were lockup also.
But without lockup and with any higher stall there will be alot of excess heat build up from the slip of the converter. The engine rpm in 4th will ussually be way under most reasonable stall speeds. and being under the rated stall will generate heat. Any engine motion not turn directly into vehicle motion be come heat.
How did he end up with a 700r4 converter without lockup and how does he know the converter does not have lockup?
I mean people do make them that way (never understood the concept) but they do.

i thought the input shafts were different?
my first PTC stall was a 700R4 and it would not fit on my 4L60E. Problems never stopped since that day

the 86 -97 700r4 and 4l60e shared the same input shaft set up and would swap. The 98 up LSX application converter is different with the 4l60e

You are a wealth of knowledge. You should build transmissions for a living.

The converter is one from Redneck converters, it has a 3000 stall rating. I don't understand why he bought a non-lockup either, But its burning the fluid up in no time.

Well running a non lockup hes gonna need alotta cooler. There is also a valve that can be placed in the lockup bore to increase lube and cooling. I have seen them but never actually used one because to me and OVERDRIVE trans without lockup is a waste of time . May as well be a 3 speed.
