I would get a Circle D 3200 or an FTI 3200 IMO if you were sticking with the 278mm. The FTI street brawler 278mm 3200rpm is only $349. FTI is a very good converter / trans company and they are praised on the sister site ls1tech.

Run the Circle D. It's what I'm running, it's street friendly, and you retain the ability to tow up to 4,000 lbs.
EDIT: Check the local place out. Talk to some people that are running their stall and see how they do in a DD setup. If the converter is loose, it probably won't be the best for DDing. The Circle-D is a tight stall, so you don't actually have to turn 3k to get moving.

The Roadrunner would be fine if you're not planning on any power adders. I had one with a TVS1900 on a 5.3 and it ballooned, tore up the thrust bearing. It felt good though, similar to a Yank. Past a cam and long tubes though, I would get something with a billet cover.
