i know the ole 4l60e is not known for being a strong trans. but what about other companies? i see 4l80e swap stuff for dodges. so that tells me they must not be much better. and what about ford how strong are they? just wondering. chevy gets much hell over 4l60e do the other companies have a crap trans of their own?

IMO, every manufactuers light duty transmissions are just good enough to make it during light duty use. It is a cost savings for a manufactuer to do it this way and not give us what we deserve as customers that they advertise, Quality and Durability.

you do get a good 4l60e every once in a while. my dads (98 or 96?) ecsb has over 300,000 miles on original motor and tranny with alot of weight towed behind it. And I remember his vortec 5.7L had alot of grunt. My mothers 00 ecsb z71 went out at 100,000 or so. Ive replaced 5 built 60's, each one lasting about 2 weeks, last year until I finished my 4l80 conversion.

I think the 4L60E is a good trans if you can keep it cool. 10 years ago almost nothing made enough power to break a built 4l60. Now these LS motors make insane power pretty easy and the cooling hasnt improved much for the trans.
Right now I'm dealing with an 06' Buick Raineer(fake trailblazer I-6) and with 70k on it the trans is slipping and screwing up. I logged it after changing the fluid and filter on a simple 4 mile drive to the parts store the trans was running 218*. Thats insane for a short 10 minute trip. That POS doesnt have a trans cooler either, just the radiator, which is too small also.

The transmissions in the Dodge Rams are shitty once performance parts go on and trans tuning begins. There was one thread here where a Ram guy was getting about 5-7 track passes on one tranny before it would blow. I think he even made it through 15+ transmissions.

The 4L60E is actually a good trans for its intended application. You leave the car/truck stock used in the manor intended by the car manufacturer and it will last a very long time, I have seen many with 200000 plus miles.
The 60e gets a bad rap because 1 everyone hates transmission upgrades (they dont make the car faster) and people just keep putting more and more power in there and expecting it to hold.
Chrysler trans fail in te same manor. I will say ford did a really nice job with the 4r70w trans they made.
