Installing locker but not swapping gears?

Like said above, you must check what backlash you have now...assuming the rear is quiet now, obviously.
Put it together with same shims on same sides of carrier and check to see if backlash is the same as it was...very simple and all you need is a decent dial indicator and magnetic base.
Also said above, make sure bearing caps are re-installed on same side, and in same orientation as it came apart.
If it makes you feel any better, I rebuild drive units at work and rebuild rears as a little sidejob thing for friends, and can't recall ever having to change the shims/settings whenever I have swapped in a different carrier only (literally dozens of times, probably more since I've been doing this crap for 30 years now), so hopefully you'll have the same luck.

ive just measured the back lash as soon as i pull the cover off.. write that down somewhere
lay the bearing caps so you know where they go, and how they go. also put the shims with the caps
put ring gear on the differiential
put it all back together and TQ down the caps.
check the backlash, if its within .001-.002" your good.
