If you disconnect the cable can you move the shifter on the dash?

No. Even when disconnected it doesn't want to move. I'm gonna charge my battery and see if that helps. Chevrolet all the way saI'd the solenoid might have got stuck and needs some power to release

Make sure the steering wheel is able to turn freely before attempting to release the shift lever.

thats just where it joins together..i had a problem when i put my new cable in..i didnt have that pushed together far enough and i couldnt shift..pushed it together and everything was fine..

fwiw, i had my battery out of the truck for 5 months and all i would have to do is put the key forward and i could shift out of park with no power

That's usually how mine was. How do you take that deal apart? It may be kinked up in there or something.

there are tabs that you can press and pull it apart i believe..how many miles on the truck? my cable siezed up under the carpet below the drivers feet from it wearing through the plastic casing.
