Clean that housing out good man, you don't need hard slivers of **** messing with your replacement going in. If you use the ring and pinion make sure to check for embedded debris, that crap will be mushed flat and adhere to the gears meshing surfaces.
I replaced my peg-legger before it started making noise, the small gears in the cenetr looked like hell.

Hell, if it was me and you didn't have to drive more than 3-4 miles i'd leave the cover off and smear grease all over the ring gear teeth and keep her under 40mph. But i'm not **** like most. Save your 60 bucks on a tow.

My dad has AAA coverage, doesn't cost anything to tow.
Truck is at the shop now, should have it back this afternoon. I checked the gears over really well and they look fine, I will have the shop do the same.
