Default Engine braking causes trans to kick out of gear

I'm running a Performabilt Lvl2 trans. Just as the title says. I'll be coming down the hill into town, drop the trans into 3 (doing about 45 ish) and the truck will go into 3rd for a few seconds, then it kicks itself out of gear. It will go back in if I kick it back up into OD and give it a little gas. I'm seeing no slipping anywhere, fluid looks/smells perfect and is within operating temperature. Other than doing this, everything appears to be working perfectly.

Any idea what would be causing this? The drivetrain has been problem free for nearly 10,000 miles now.

No, it's kicking all the way out of gear. RPMs drop to just over idle, you can hear the sound of what sounds like light gear grinding. Not near like a manual, just like something is free spinning that shouldn't be.

Sounds like the beginning of an input sprag failure and over run clutch if I had to guess. These are the two components for engine braking.

Anyway to check these without tearing it down?

Try manual 2nd and 1st to see if you have engine braking. In any event you will be pulling that trans one way or another if I had to guess.

It does still engine brake for several seconds before it kicks out. That's what seems strange to me. May just keep it going until this winter, I have a list of projects for this truck over the winter months, not going to hurt to add another one to it I suppose.

Thanks Vince.
