Default driveline clunk revisited, please read and give feedback

OK, this has been talked about a thousand times, and I've even posted about it before.

However...several of the guys on here have posted the same problems I am having (squawking from rear-end/drive shaft, clunking when stopping and going) and even quoted Service Bulletins and numbers that cover this exact problems. Mine happens to fall into the 00-04 Yukon XL category.

I got tired of the noise and took it to the dealership. They say nothing is wrong -the drive shaft slop is normal, the clunk is normal, and get this....the squawk is normal too because I have a steel driveshaft and don't comply w/ the nickel/brass plated yoke replacement -that is supposedly only for guys w/ aluminum drive shafts.

One guy told me about pulling the drive shaft (again) and putting a half of a rubber bouncy ball in there to keep it from bottoming out. I will try that...believe me.

But...what the heck gives? I talked to GM directly and they take no ownership. What is THE fix? I don't want to hear replace the transmission, drive shaft, and rear-end...there's got to be something else.

don't get me wrong...I finally convinced myself that I was a freak and needed to let it go, enjoy the ride, not worry...but when I come to a stop and it feels like a GEO rear-ends me evertime "the clunk" happens, it just pi$$es me off all over again.

oh...and I can't pick up any radio stations except the local one (1) because the radio quit working too....how's that for a testimony? I've owned GMs all my life, and will always own f-bodies and other GM cars, but I'm starting to worry about what GM thinks is normal slopiness in their trucks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greasing the yoke going into your tranny will take some of the noise out.
Use a lot of lithium or synthetic grease, then slide it in.
My clunking virtually went away when I greased the hell out the grease cert on my two piece driveshaft.
Some have the grease cert and some don't. The aluminum or one piece driveshaft guys don't have a grease cert.
I think most of the guys that complain about it have a 4x4. A lot of the clunking is in the play in the transfer case.
When my brother had his 01' Z71 t-case rebuilt, his clunking went away.
I guess GM uses a bit too much end play in the assembly of the internal parts.
Good Luck!

Jim

Thanks...mine is 4x4 so that explains another variable that none of the 3 other full size GMs in my family have, which don't clunk or squawk. Mine is a one piece DS too.

for anybody that cares: my squawking kept coming back, and the clunk got worse and worse. It is now at a big dealership (skipped the local yocal one this time) and is getting the new nickel slip yoke and new u-joints. $400 is nothing if it really fixed it -can't wait to see.

They sent me home in a new 07 Yukon XL -now...this thing is nice, and drive completely different than the 06 and below. If it weren't $50,000 I'd just trade!!!
