Difference between 1500 and 2500 front differential.
#1
I recently realized the front diff on my silverado 1500 needs to be rebuilt. I use 4 wheel drive alot so I have been trying to decide either rebuild what i have or buy something new and different. I have been looking at a few 2500 differentials online and couldnt see any difference between them. Is there a difference or will a front differential from a 2500 bolt in fairly easy. Or any other reccommendations would be great. Thanks.

I can say for sure that the CV joints flanges that mate to the axle flanges are 6 bolt but have a wider pattern than the 1500's but the splines are the same 33 spline if I remember correctly and fit into my 02' Sierra wheel bearings no problem. The length of them is very close between the two aswell. Anymore info about the front differential I don't know, but I imagine it mounts the same way as the 1500.

There was a write-up several years ago on GMFullsize, but whatever the case it’s unfortunately not a direct swap. It can and has been done before though, however usually as a whole to also gain the 8-lug hubs. The previous gentleman was correct in the spines are the same at the hub, and generally fit from what I understand on the GMT-800’s, however some of the older trucks may need the CV stub end turned down slightly to clear the inside of the spindle. The mounts on the center housing of the differential can be made to work, but the passenger side axle tube mount is slightly off and would need to be addressed. Also the center differential housing, while looking remarkably similar is larger and would need some of the stiffening ribs on the outside of the case removed or at least taken down for clearance. Custom length, as well as stronger CV’s can be obtained, so it is doable, but like I said at the beginning not a direct R&R affair.
