Default buddy hit a curb, now he has a front end noise

my room mate drives a 99 tahoe. he hit a curb last week hard enough to break the wheel. he stuck a new wheel on there and now he has a prety harsh noise in that area. turn one way and it is quiet. strait it is just once in awhile, turn the other way and it is loud. it isn't a grind. it is a little more than just a banging noise, it sounds like a little bit of a bind/bang at the same time.

we looked under the truck, grabed some stuff and shook it. turned the wheel over by hand and even tried to wiggle the wheel fromt he top of the tire. everything looks ok to me but i dont know much about that stuff. i grabed the 1/2 shaft on that side and tried to move it and twist it around, we didn't see anything doing that.

i suspect the 1/2 shaft but that is just a guess. any ideas anyone?

4 wd and curb = jacked up half shaft. I did this in my dads truck a couple years ago. When he drives it straight does it pull to one side?

yeah it does sound like a half shaft... have you taken off the boot to look at the CV's? there may be some problems in there....

cant really be any problems in the cv if the cv is still intact. A cv is either intact/working.....or broke.

CV's can make noise and still be intact. FWD's get to where they pop and make noise all the time. If it is not the wheel bearings, then it would almost have to be the CV. It would have to be something that was rotating and the CV and the bearings are all that are moving.

My brother has an 05 impala that he recently smacked a curb with. Car had a shake in it afterwards, and a rumble and a pop. Turned over smooth by hand but upon further inspection the wheel bearing collapsed in. I guess on the new cars they're designed to crush upon side impact to absorb shock to the rest of the suspension. For the blow to be bad enough to hurt the halfshaft, I would say the wheel bearing took the majority of the blow first and that is what actually needs replacement. Check it out
