It called the tailshaft or propeller shaft seal, its not hard to replace at all.

1. raised rear of vehicle or entire vehicle if you have a lift.
2. remove drive shaft by taking out the 4 11mm bolts at the rear u joint where it attaches to the pinion.
3. take a small prybar or screwdriver and a hammer and seperate the seal from the extension housing, takes a little bit to but work your way around the seal till you get it seperated then use the hammer and punch/prybar/or similar and knock it out, dont worry about damaging it your going to.
4. lightly tap knew seal in place with hammer until it starts to seat the using a round pin punch and hammer go around the seal tapping it in till fully seated.
5.reinstall driveshaft and check/fill trans fluid. a small amount may come out when seal is removed.

If that dosent fix it there is also a bushing and seal inside the extension housing that could have been damaged, more to that repair though.

I'm pretty sure that there's a bushing in the tailshaft that can wear in these situations, someone please correct me if I'm wrong....but if I'm correct, before you replace the tailshaft seal, grab the driveshaft and move it up and down, if there' too much play, there is a bushing in the tailshaft that got wiped out when the driveshaft grenaded. You'll just end up with a new leaky seal if it needs the bushing...

*EDIT* you have to remove the tailshaft housing to replace that bushing btw...

It's very likely that there is a small crack in the extension housing. This is common when the driveline breaks. It is also easily replaced.

i had a bad bushing in my nv149 case. didn't know it and went through a few seals before i realized someone had rigged a bushing inside there. i had to use a different back half on the case cause it was so bad.

Who is working on your truck??? They don't seem too knowledgeable. They should've checked the extension housing, replaced the seal if the housing is good, and topped off the fluid. That's pretty basic and general for this type of repair.

Ummm, wow! Is it documented with them yet that they sent it out without refilling the transmission? Maybe your transmission is slipping now. Catch my drift?
