60E to 80E 4wd Questions

Default 60E to 80E 4wd Questions

Guys, I am mulling over the possibility of doing the swap. I know its been discussed a lot and I have read every post on it but I am missing something.

I know I need a 4l80e for a 4wd application. I know I need to swap out the input gear on my transfer case to accept the 80e shaft. What I am not clear on is how do I connect the trans and transfer case together from there. Its an NVG-246 NP8 autotrack transfer case. Do I use the tail shaft housing of the 80e or 60E. Do I need an adapter of some sort with either?

bolts right up. the conversion adapter (trans to t-case) will be steel instead of aluminum I believe. At least I remember mine being really stout.

So you are saying the 80E 4wd tailshaft housing, conversion adapter in your speak , will bolt right up to my transfer case?

Yep, there's a skinny metal adapter that goes between the two. IIRC, it's about 3-4 inches wide and just adapts the bolt patterns. If you don't get one with your trans, check a local hard parts dealer. I got mine from TruBest Hard Parts here in Phoenix. I think it was about $35 or so.

So its the 80e.

Then something like this.


Then bolt on the transfer case. Sorry if I'm being dense about this. Having a hard time with it. I guess the output shaft on a 4l80e is much shorter than a 60e.

That's the one! It also serves as the rear tranny mount too.

What is your gear set size? 3.73?
I have 4.10 and am really thinking of stepping up to a 4.56 to offset the long 1st gear ratio in the 80E vs the 60E. Just planting that bug since you will have it all apart anyway.
