Default 4x4 issues

This is for a friends truck Its an 03 with pushbutton 4x4. When he puts it into 4x4 hi it takes a while to go in and he gets service 4x4 message. How do these systems work? Is there a actuator in the transfer case and another one in the front pig? is there just a single point where the 4x4 disconnects in the transfercase. The thought is that since what ever solenoid turns on the 4x4 its taking to long so thats why he gets the service 4x4 message

so in 2wd the front drive terrain spins, the cv shafts, the front pig, and the front drive shaft all the way back to the transfercase?

Is the diode replaced when you replace the switch? He siad the 4x4 light jsut sits there and blinks then after a while it finally goes into 4x4

The encoder motor engages the transfer case, there is a sensor inside that tells the position of the motor. Thats more then likely your problem.
