On my ratrod with a 4l80e I bought the correct slip yoke then found a driveshaft at the wrecking yard with 1350 u joints. Took the parts to a machine shop & had them shorten the shaft to the corrects length.

any year 4l80e will work, but the 98 and newer are the strongest design, 93-95 are the weakest, 96-97 are decent. I went with an 02 that was a core with worn clutches and had it built. Its easiest to stay with your model year or similar, therefor the NSS and electrical connections are the same, there are 2 plug and 1 plug versions.

I think the 98- were missing a hole at the top of the bell housing and the 99+ got 7 holes all the way around.

The top hole isn't necessary if the trans isn't drilled for it, the older sbc and bbc did just fine without it. I know plenty of people running around without the top bolt anyway because they are too dumb to realize its simple to get in/out from the top of the motor vs underneath.

Do the older sbc not have the passenger side top bolt either?

Cant remember, been quite awhile since i've worked on one. But 6 bolts is plenty, the bolts only hold the trans tight to the engine, the dowel pins align, prevent twist. The trans on boss hoss bikes only have 4 bolts and the one at our shop makes 1100hp and runs 135mph in the 1/8th. Plenty to hold it together.

Which years were the one plug and which years were the two plug? What year ranges after 2000 are similar and when did they change or did they before the 6 speed AOD?
